If a worker isn’t working their one true dream job, they are probably getting tired of their job or even worse, actively hating their occupation. Let’s face it: there are zero jobs that are an exception to the rule that a job gets boring over time. No one is protected against burnout.

What’s worse is that the workers who are in underpaid jobs face double the stress in contrast to highly paid workers. The underpaid workers have to think how to stretch their money, and survive in a job that is monotonous. If you are facing daily monotony you would want to at least get paid well.

Getting a raise is a common problem for workers who work in companies which do not offer them any room for growth. Positions like senior specialists have a limited room for career growth and are often overlooked for raises. Using the tips and strategies discussed in this article will help specialists maximize their chances for wage growth.

This blog has already discussed how to advance in life by using social engineering methods. These methods can be applied to any workplace and used to gain a higher income without doing more work. However, lets examine other, more conventional, methods for a higher wage.

#1: Look busy without being busy

This advice is repeated very often to people who are looking for a raise, and many people swear by this strategy. It’s easy to see why. An idle worker who is always doing non-work related stuff will not create a favourable impression upon his or hers superiors. The reality of the workplace culture is that the higher-ups prefer people who look busy. The logic is quite simple: busy worker – more work being done – higher profits for the company.

Of course, the work quality of the busy worker may be bad. But in the eyes of the worker’s bosses, hard work (looking busy) has more worth compared to the worker who delivers high quality work without even looking busy. That would mean that the work is easy for the employee, and therefore the employee is not worthy of a higher wage.

Flawed logic, but any person can take advantage of it.

Constant overtime work is not worth it. Occasional overtime, with work until very late at night is better. Why? Because constant overtime will start looking like the new normal very fast in the eyes of the superiors. To take advantage of your overtime, go on frequent WC breaks and try to appear busy. It most likely does not matter if the worker actually finishes their work. What matters in this case is their dedication to the company. Just be careful to not apply this advice when there are actual and important deadlines.

Looking busy in the workplace during work hours is even easier. If you work with a computer, take advantage of internet services that mimic Outlook or a programming screen. The service that mimics Outlook lets you browse an interesting web content aggregator, Reddit.

Drawing diagrams on paper, typing up something and deleting it, staring at a computer screen intensely will allow the worker to look busy without actually doing anything.

#2: Use work time for self-improvement

You can probably sneak in printed pages related to your hobbies or passions into the pile of documents on your desk. Use your work time to explore your real passions and self-improve as a person. By learning new skills during work time, you can get ahead of other employees. Everyone will think that you are sacrificing your personal time in order to be a better worker, when in reality you are just gaming the system.

Also by exploring their hobbies during work time, a worker can advance in their knowledge of it. This can lead to landing a better paid job.

#3: Repeat great ideas if they aren’t heard

We all get angry when someone else steals your ideas in the workplace. Or if we read about jerks who steal ideas in meetings. These people shouldn’t be praised.

But who says a worker can’t learn from them? Obviously, stealing other people’s ideas is bad. But rephrasing great ideas and using them as your own, if the other person is not going to pursue them, isn’t exactly bad. Repeating other person’s idea while acknowledging the other person’s input also isn’t reprehensible behaviour.

Furthermore, by giving respect and acknowledgement to other workers you may even make some deeper workplace connections. They always come in handy when you need a favour from someone.

If a employee’s workplace values meeting participation and idea generation, repeating ideas that aren’t being heard can be the easiest way towards a higher wage without doing more work.

#4: Present your ideas in the right way

Coming up with your own ideas can be hard. It’s even harder when they are rejected. After all, innovators in good workplaces get the raises they want and deserve.

Suppose an employee has come up with an idea how to improve a company’s product. If the employee gets the chance to present their ideas, the employee most likely will do a PowerPoint presentation. And 90% of the time, a presentation will be overloaded with text and meaningless pictures. That’s a sure-fire way to lose a chance for a raise.

I suggest quantifying your idea. Present only one or two text boxes, and use the left up space for numbers. If you can get a number to be high, such as 30% or 40% that’s even better. If the message through the whole presentation is e.g. returns of the product will be cut by 30%, instead of meaningless pictures and corporate jargon, the employee’s effort are very likely to get recognised.

Money talks. Especially in the corporate world. Quantifying your ideas and relating them to higher profits or other business metrics will get you more than a qualitative presentation.

#5: Your boss as your friend

It’s not worth being a boot-licker, since management changes are frequent and no one can ever be sure who will become the next supervisor. A worker can pick the wrong person to become closer with, and get burned by it. Also, being a boot-licker requires not having a sense of shame. This strategy is not worth it.

A better way to earn a higher income without doing more work is to become friends with your boss. Friends as in “laughs at each other’s jokes” and not as in “knows each other’s birthdays”. Being an actual friend of a boss is too risky, since a friendship can fall apart at any time. Being a kindred-spirit like person in the work place is better.

Don’t ever try hard to become a friend of your boss. No matter how sneaky your efforts are, they will get noticed by your boss and other co-workers. I suggest not having negative thoughts about your boss during your work time, since they can and will get noticed. Fake smiles and laughs are also not the way to do it.

Try to see the real person behind your boss and start appreciating it. A genuine laugh at a corny joke or an observation will create a favourable impression. A favourable impression will also be created if the worker does not avoid their boss and is easy to talk to. This impression can net significant benefits during yearly reviews and during negotiations related to wage raises.

If everything doesn’t work

If an employee has tried all of these methods, and they still don’t see a raise coming their way, I suggest cutting losses and looking for a new job. After all, a higher income is always one job interview away.
